Student Life

Our school values community, student growth and active learning. Through long-standing traditions, cultural experiences, and family involvement, we create a supportive environment that recognizes effort, encourages curiosity and brings people together. Below are a few ways we put these values into practice throughout the school year.

Gobble Off
Held the day before Thanksgiving break, one student per class competes in a turkey gobble contest while wearing a turkey-head paper bag. The school cheers on as students gobble; prizes include a turkey for 1st place and a pie for 2nd. A long-standing tradition—nearly 40 years!

Read Across America
Each March, students celebrate reading during Dr. Seuss' birthday week with spontaneous “Drop Everything and Read” moments throughout the day.

Cultural Celebration Week
Every May, the school highlights a different culture through music, books, art, food tastings and guest presentations. Past themes include Asia, with activities like Taiko drumming and wildlife demos. Amani Family Services and FWCS Nutrition Services have partnered to enhance the experience.

Rock Fest
The Modern Band performs for families and the community, showcasing songs they’ve practiced all year.

Riley Fundraiser
Students raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital in hopes of earning "Miracle School" status.

100 Year Celebration
This fall, the school marked its 100th year with an open house, artifact displays, and tours, welcoming back alumni and community members.

Title I Family Events
Each grade level hosts a reading/math-focused event for families, including:

  • K–1: Sight Word Bingo

  • 2–3: IREAD Ice Cream Social

  • 4–5: “Discover Your Path” Career Event

Shoutouts
Staff recognize students for positive behavior and academics. Shoutouts are read during video announcements and entered into a weekly prize drawing.

Carnival
A beloved May tradition with classic games, bounce houses, pony rides, food and music. Families purchase tickets at the gate for food and games both outside and in the cafeteria.

Field Trips
Annual grade-level trips include:

  • Pre-K: Chance Restaurant

  • K: Safety Village

  • 1st: Zoo

  • 3rd: Survive Alive

  • 4th: History Center, Courthouse, Young People’s Concert

  • 5th: McMillen

All-School Assemblies
Held monthly to celebrate student achievements. Awards include High Soaring Hawk (character), Reading Rockstar, Master Mathematician, attendance and class awards like Best Attendance and Golden Dustpan. Fun games tie into monthly character traits.

Spring & Winter Concerts
All students perform in seasonal concerts, singing songs for families to showcase their hard work and talent.
